Our residencies are immersive experiences set in serene seaside villas, offering artists a sanctuary to create, reflect, and connect. We host two residencies annually:
- Summer Residency: A month-long retreat during the vibrant summer months.
- Winter Residency: A two-week sojourn amidst the contemplative ambiance of winter.
Each residency is designed to encourage artists to delve deep into their practice, drawing inspiration from the ever-changing moods of the sea.
The Odyssey Piece
In homage to the epic journeys of old, each artist is invited to create an “Odyssey Piece” upon returning to their home studio. This work encapsulates the essence of their residency experience, serving as both a culmination and a new beginning—a testament to the transformative power of the sea.
Each artist who participates in a Villart Residency creates a final work known as The Odyssey Piece—a post-residency creation made back in the artist’s own studio. This practice honors the cyclical nature of the creative journey: from the stillness of the sea to the stirrings of new creation back home.
Inspired by the notion of “There and back again,” the Odyssey Piece serves as both an epilogue and a new beginning. It captures what was stirred during the residency—what was absorbed, what was discovered, what followed them home in tide and light.
Post-Voyage
Villart residencies do not end with departure. We collaborate with leading curators to present the works created during our programs in exhibitions held at reputable galleries, academic institutions, maritime museums, and cultural venues across the globe.
Maritime museums, in particular, hold a special place in our mission—as spaces that bridge the art of navigation with the navigation of art.
